From the Golden Gate to Gold Country, kids ride free on Amtrak through November 1

Now through November 1, 2009, kids ages 2-15 are invited to ride Amtrak’s Capitol Corridor line free on weekends. The offer is good for up to two free children’s tickets with the purchase of one full-priced adult ticket. The Capitol Corridor line makes stops from Auburn to San Jose, including Sacramento and San Francisco (through free shuttle service from the Emeryville station).

This means now is the perfect time for an Amtrak weekend getaway at our Sacramento Hostel, housed in a beautiful Gold Rush mansion, or one of our three San Francisco hostels, with locations in Civic Center, Downtown/Union Square, and Fort Mason/Fisherman’s Wharf.

On September 12 and 13, San Francisco’s Ghirardelli Square Chocolate Festival, offers a whole weekend of chocolatey goodness, with chef demonstrations, family-oriented activities, and wine and chocolate pairings. Now through September 20, free Shakespeare in the Park performances take place every weekend in the Presidio. This year’s play, A Comedy of Errors, features slapstick humor, circus-style entertainment, sharp wit, and clever word play, so both kids and adults are guaranteed a good time.

Meanwhile, Sacramento turns back the clock over Labor Day weekend (Sept. 4-7) with the annual Gold Rush Days celebration, when the city’s historic district transforms into a scene straight out of the 1850s, complete with costumed re-enactors, musicians playing period instruments, and Wild West gun fights.

Tickets are available at staffed Amtrak stations, at Quik-Trak vending machines, onboard the train (at un-staffed stations), or online at tickets.amtrak.com. If you purchase tickets online, be sure to enter promo code V213 to get the Kids Ride Free discount.
